Excessive decay or infection involving the nerve of the tooth can result in a symptomatic root canal and tooth.  Removing bacteria, nerves, and decay will allow the tooth to be saved in most instances.  The tooth is then filled with special materials which will restore the tooth.  Root canal therapy is the recommended treatment of choice to save teeth that would otherwise have to be removed.  Replacing a missing tooth can be rather costly and cause more significant problems.
